Viens no vecākajiem "Kamēliju Dāma" izdevumiem (1856) ° One of the oldes editions of "The Lady of the Camellias" |
The novel is set in Paris in the 19th century. The story is about the courtesan's Marguerite Gautier and the wealthy young man's Armand Duval relationship. And his love was so true and selfless that he was ready to forget her past and many favorite, forgive her everything and fulfill all her desires. He was ready to take care of her fragile health and give her all his life. Being a courtesan Marguerite always felt like a thing, like a beautiful accessory that confirm her favorite ambition and self - confidence. And this is why she was so surprised about Armand's true and altruistic feelings. She said to him:"... you love me because of my own not for yourself . But others have always loved me because of themselves."
For some time, they manage to escape from reality and settle down in a small rural village, where they can enjoy intimity, genuine moments of happiness and indulge in dreams of a beautiful and common future. But when winter comes all rosy dreams and plans begin to fade...

Aleksandrs Dimā (dēls) ° Alexandre Dumas, the Younger |

Marī Diplesī portrets ° A portret of Marie Duplessis |
I was touched by their love and sacrifice. Novel seemed so real that I couldn't get free of feeling - it was written based on some real story, some real situation. And I was wright! Alexandre Dumas wrote this novel after death of his favorite Marie Duplessis. At that time she was the most famous Parisian courtesan. The novel almost exactly describe the story of Dumas and Duplessis relationship. The only difference is that Marie's love in reality wasn't so strong and true as it was in the novel. After a few months spent in the countryside she returned to her beloved Paris. The reason she left Dumas wasn't the desire to save the good name of her beloved, she left because of the boredom witch started to overwhelm her. She stopped the relationship and started to elude him. Marie Duplessis just like Marguerite Gautier was suffering from tuberculosis and died from this disease at the age of 23, one and a half year after stopping relationship with Dumas.

- Romāns "Kamēliju Dāma" ticis gan iestudēts teātra un baleta izrādēs, gan ekranizēts dažādās filmu vesijās sākot no mēmā kino laikiem līdz mūsdienām.
Here are some interesting facts:
- Why Alexandre Dumas named his novel exactly "The Lady of the Camellias"? As I said Marie Duplessis was suffering from tuberculosis and feeling strong odor of flowers she fainted but but camellias have no smell. This is the reason why she chose to carry bouquets consisting only of camellias.
- To write the novel Dumas got inspiration from his relationship with Duplessis, but theatrical performance based on this novel inspired Giuseppe Verdi to compose an opera witch has become a classic and is well known nowadays - "La Traviata".
- This novel has been popular since time it was created and there are many theatrical performances and ballet performances based on it. And there are many novel screenings since the silent film times till nowadays. One of the latest versions is movie "Moulin Rouge!". Scene of this movie is inspired by the story about Marguerite and Armand.
